The origins of Sufism lie in the life and practices of the Prophet of Islam and the Quran. Sufism emerged from a well-founded interpretation of Islam with a particular focus on love, tolerance, and giving through self-discipline and community responsibility. The Whirling Dervishes took their names from Jelaleddin Rumi (1207-1273), the mystical poet and great Sufi master, called Mevlana. A Sufi way of life is to love and be of service to people and Sufis chant through prayers, music, and a whirling dance to show their loves to God. This popular whirling dervishes show is performed at the HodjaPasha Cultural Center, a cultural mosaic of the city near the Hagia Sophia Basilica and the Topkapi Palace. UNESCO has declared the Whirling Dance as a Heritage of Humanity. The Sema ceremony of the dervishes is a journey through man’s spiritual ascent to “perfection” through mind and love—a truly unmissable and astonishing experience of music and moves. Exhibition at the HodjaPasha Cultural Center also displays information and stories about dervishes and their ceremony, books about dervishes, special objects of dervishes such as clothing, musical instruments, and personal tools. As part of the unique exhibition, there are interactive Rumi poems and sufi music examples, Hyperrealist style statues of dervishes, and video shows.
